The tripeptide γ-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine (glutathione, GSH) is the most abundant endogenous antioxidant, synthesised intracellularly via the γ-glutamyl cycle. Investigated in preclinical models for its capacity to neutralise reactive oxygen species, detoxify xenobiotics via glutathione S-transferase conjugation, and serve as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase-mediated reduction of lipid hydroperoxides. Used as a research tool in oxidative stress biology, detoxification pathway studies, and cellular redox biochemistry.
